Suppose you or someone you love is struggling with addiction. In that case, you may wonder whether an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an ideal choice for your case. What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?
Sometimes, people be confused when it comes to IOPs and PHPs. They may think the two outpatient program types are the same, but they have many differences. An IOP is a type of treatment that provides therapeutic services during the day but allows patients to return home in the evening. IOPs typically meet three to five days weekly for three to eight hours daily. Services offered in an IOP may include:
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Family therapy
Some IOPs also offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Medications used in MAT include methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone. These medications help reduce cravings and symptoms of withdrawal, making it easier for patients to stick with treatment.
What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?
A PHP is a type of treatment that provides therapeutic services during the day but allows patients to return home in the evening. PHPs typically meet five to seven days weekly for four to six hours daily. Like an IOP, services offered in a PHP may include individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy. However, all PHPs provide MAT. When it comes to IOP vs. PHP, some notable differences include:
- Access to MAT – As mentioned earlier, all PHPs offer MAT. Not all IOPs do.
- Treatment duration – An IOP typically lasts eight weeks or less, while a PHP can last up to 12 weeks.
- Treatment intensity – A PHP generally is more intense than an IOP, with more hours of treatment per week.
IOP and PHP are effective treatment options for addiction, but the best choice for you or your loved one depends on various factors. However, compared to standard outpatient addiction treatment programs, IOPs and PHPs are more intensive and offer more support, making them better choices for those struggling with addiction. If you’re not sure which program is right for your case, decide with someone from a rehab center’s admissions staff.
When Should You Consider Outpatient Rehab for Addiction?
If you have a robust support system at home and are motivated to stay sober, outpatient rehab for addiction may be a good option. Outpatient rehab can also be a good option if you have completed an inpatient rehab program and are looking for continued care.
Inpatient rehab for addiction may be a better option if you don’t have a strong support system at home or are not motivated to stay sober.
